If you’re experiencing issues with your Lumii printer’s Z-axis—such as unusual movement, grinding noises, or the build plate becoming stuck—there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
This guide will walk you through:
- Manually checking Z-axis movement
- Inspecting and reconnecting the motor cable
Cleaning the Z-Axis
Begin by inspecting the ball screw for any dust, debris, or excessive grease buildup. Clean it thoroughly using a microfiber cloth, and use alcohol for deeper cleaning if necessary. Once clean, apply lubricant to the ball screw to ensure smooth and consistent movement.
For detailed cleaning instructions, refer to this article.
Manually Checking the Z-Axis and Motor
If the Z-axis becomes stuck or you hear unusual grinding noises during printing, the issue may lie within the Z-axis mechanism or the motor itself.
Power Down and Prepare
- Turn off the printer.
- Remove the building plate and resin vat.
Manually Rotate the Ball Screw
- Rotate the ball screw by hand in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions.
- Check for smooth and consistent movement throughout the entire range of motion.
- If you feel any resistance or the ball screw doesn’t move freely, it could be due to contamination or lack of lubrication. Clean and lubricate the ball screw as needed.
Reconnecting the Motor Connectors
A loose motor connector can cause Z-axis malfunctions. Reconnecting the motor cable may resolve the issue.
Before You Begin
Tools Needed:
- 2.5 mm allen wrench
- 2 mm allen wrench
Power Down and Prepare
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Place the printer on a flat, stable surface.
Removing the Back Case
- Use the 2 mm allen wrench to remove the screws on the side of the printer securing the back case.
- Then use the 5 mm allen wrench to remove the screws on top of the printer.
Note: Please open the front case of the printer slowly to avoid damaging the touch panel cable.
Reconnect the Motor Connector
- Locate the motor cable, which connects to both the mainboard and the motor assembly.
- Carefully disconnect the cable from the mainboard by pulling it straight out.
- Reinsert the connector into the mainboard, ensuring it is properly aligned and securely connected.
- Disconnect the cable from the motor.
- Reinsert the connector into the motor, confirming proper alignment and a firm connection.
- Verify that both connections are secure before proceeding.
Verify Functionality
- Plug in the power cord and turn on the printer.
- Run the Z-axis calibration test on the touch panel.
- Confirm that the Z-axis operates smoothly and without obstruction.
Reassemble the Back Case
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord again.
- Carefully close the back case.
- Tighten all screws using the appropriate allen wrenches.
